So this past weekend I was at a house party and happened to see the single most miserably neglected fish I have ever seen in my life. The water had an opaque layer of something that looked kind of like grease on top and the single fish inside was listless and shrivelled. It smelled FOUL and the guy hosting the party said that they had noticed the fish being kind of stupid since they had changed the water last time (which must have been like a fucking year ago) by just running the tub into the tank.

Being full of whiskey and compassion(?), I naturally decided that the fish was now mine and reached into that disgusting cesspool with a ziplock bag, took the fish home, cackling to myself because what I was doing was just so weird.

The next day I went out and got a tank, like, I dropped 100$ for a stolen goldfish that cost 4.38$ at PetSmart. I went to a locally owned small pet shop called Paws N’ Jaws and the woman there was super helpful and even gave me some free plants with the tank. Ended up being up til like 2 in the morning with school the next day at 8 setting the stupid thing up, panicking about dechlorinating the water etc etc.

These are his new digs, live plants, snaily companions. He’s perked up A LOT since being moved to an environment that actually has oxygen in the water, and has shown marked improvement in his ability to eat. For the first day or so, his motor skills appeared to be completely fucked up and he had a hard time swimming and eating, he would suck up food and then just spit it right back out. Now he’s having a great time, eating well harassing the snails, trying to eat the plants and zipping around the tank for no apparent reason like a moron, but a happy moron. I really enjoy watching him.. or her.

Admittedly I might have done this even if I had been sober, but I like to think this is proof that not ALL decisions made when drunk are bad ones. I regret nothing.

You are a lovely human being. <3

YOU WENT TO A HOUSE PARTY AND STOLE A GOLDFISH OH MY GOD THAT’S THE BEST DRUNKEN STORY I’VE EVER HEARD

this makes me happy

Drunken Goldfish Thief would be a wonderful name for a garage band.

Eeee this makes me happy.

Omfg. As an aquarist this warms my heart.

alishagee sent: hi! okay, i'm going to be a weirdo and ask about your gsp's tank. What kinda rocks do you have at the bottom & what kinda plants do you have? I heard that it's hard to put real plants in brackish water because not many survive. So yeah :3 & oh! do you feed yours snails from like petco or petsmart? or do you breed your own?

No, it’s fine, lol! I’m glad to find another GSP-enthusiast! :)

I have sand in the bottom of my tank. Most environments with brackish water have either sand or silt. Make sure you get the sand that has pH control. Anything that says it is specifically for cichlids would be good, because they also need a pH similar to that of the GSP.

I mainly stocked my brackish tank with four or five Anubias barteri. (Liveaquaria is a REALLY good site. I’ve ordered numerous times from them… They never have disappointed me even when I order live plants/fish from them. They ship on time; most of the time they’re early actually. It’s worth the expensive shipping costs. Definitely.) My puffer seemed to like eating them, so if you get holes in your plants, that’s what’s going on! Haha! Anyways… Yeah, those are some good plants for brackish. Also, here’s some other good plants to stock brackish tanks with.

I get most of my snails from Petsmart. I pretty much am biased when it comes to Petsmart/Petco but, that’s because the Petsmart I shop at is better than the local Petco, imo. My local Petco was having MAJOR tank issues (dropsy, parasitic worms, etc.)… It was bad. But, your Petco may be better. Either way, I know both sometimes have “pond” snails that they normally just give you for free (Granted… You normally have to buy something else first for them to consider it). But, I started out with about 10-15 pond snails. I started them in a tiny two-gallon tank with no air pump or filter (so babies wouldn’t get sucked up). (You might be able to put a fine-mesh filter around the filter intake? I haven’t tried it, yet, though.) Make sure you buy plenty of plants (they can be anything, they eat just about any plant)! I tend to give them a pinch of crushed goldfish flakes (or any fish food) every couple days and they will breed like crazy! I have about 200 snails right now, lol!

I would not suggest getting 10-15, feeding them to your GSP, and then going back to the store for more, though. Snails can carry parasites and really fuck up your tank and your GSP’s intestinal system. So, breeding your own is a lot healthier, imho. Especially since you know how they were handled/fed. You know exactly what you’re feeding your GSP.

Oh! One other thing… I do feed my GSP whole “human” shrimp. I thaw one and chop it into smaller pieces. He goes crazy over them. Just make sure when you buy a bag that the only thing in it is salt, water, and shrimp. No preservatives. Sodium Tripolyphosphate is alright. It is a saline solution.

I also feed him blood worms and krill. Both by Hikari. (Comparing Hikari to any other frozen fish food is like comparing a sirloin steak to a McDonald’s hamburger.)

Anyways… Hope this helped! Feel free to message me again if you have any other questions. :)

I should just start a fish store… That way I can justify sixty tanks in my house… I’m gonna end up being that Crazy Ole’ Fish Guy…

My Cambodian Veiltail betta, Darwin, passed away last night due to old age. He was a good fish. He had such a silly personality and was very smart. Every time I walked over to the tank he would swim up to my face like such an attention hog. He enjoyed the company of the other goldfish and was a very social fish even despite the reputation bettas have as “hermits” or “lone” fish. Even after I rescued him from Walmart (someone had dumped him in a bowl with another to fight), he never fought with any of them. In fact, there was a mason jar I put in the tank that everyone would sleep in together at night, including Darwin.

I love you, Darwin. Rest in peace. I’ll miss you, buddy. <3

That sounds terrifying… .-. Gravel vacs are awesome, though. You’ll see a huge improvement in water quality after using that. I swore by mine when I had my fishies. Now I just have my betta, Felix.

I thought maybe it was because my nitrate levels were really high… I’m talking 160ppm+… I did a 90% water change and they only went down to 100ppm. So, added clearifier after a couple more water changes and cleaned my filters, too. Now it’s at 80ppm… Which is the second-highest level on my chart. The tank water is this muddy brown color. It’s awful. Literally in the middle of doing a water change at the moment… That’s how I noticed the little white planaria on the side of the tank. I freaked because I thought they were parasites… They were all over the lid of the tank in the damp area and I had stuck my hand there. I do tend to overfeed my goldies… So, that’s part of the reason the planaria is there. Maybe the super-high nitrate level aided their growth? Dunno… They are terrifying looking at first… Put one in a test tube to take to Bio Lab tomorrow. Gonna check this sucker out! He looks very unhappy in the tube… Squirming around like crazy. After class I’m planning on stopping by the lfs and buying some aquarium salt, gravel cleaner/siphon, and something to help lower the nitrates… Because water changes aren’t helping too much.

Well, planaria (non-parasitic flatworms) have taken a liking to my goldfish tank…

They don’t do anything. Just means I need to clean my gravel. Though… They’re kind of creepy looking in the fact that they move like inchworms… And I refuse to stick my hand in the tank now, lol. That means no pets for Auggie for a while. Guess I’m going to have to buy a gravel siphon. :I

Let’s just take a second to admire how derpy the puffer fish is. ♥

All photos are from a Google search, except the first one. That was from this Youtube video.

Bringing this back because I fucking love puffer fish.

HOPEFULLY IT’S A REALLY GOOD THING. I’m happy he’s getting healthier.

Thank you! Me, too!

Thank you for all the help, by the way. ; u; <3

:’D At least he’s okay!

Well… He’s doing better. So, that’s a start. :’3

I had added the last of my Rid-Ich… Which wasn’t even half of a dose, but… It’s the best I can do before tomorrow morning. … I hope it’s helping a little!

ALSO! I’ve been stalking this forum called www.thepufferforum.com … They have a treatment called “RTR’s Salt & Heat Method” and I’ve started that. I haven’t added the salt yet… A little worried about my Ghost shrimps. But, as soon as I turned the heater on and the temperature went up a little, Kahuna seemed more active… Not panicked or stressed like it was too hot… Just more active like he usually is, but he is itching his chin a lot. The temp increase speeds up the Ich life cycle and the medicine can kill off the Ich quicker… So, maybe the itching is because it’s working. I don’t know. All I know is that he seems a little more like himself, which is good, I think… I HOPE.

Mogin…

I turned off all the lights about twenty minutes ago in the room I have my aquariums in. I just walked in there to find Kahuna hunting! ( :D !!! ) … But, I did noticed something strange… He kept scratching his chin on leaves, rocks, side of the tank, etc. I looked closer and he has another spot of white… So, he definitely has Ich like I thought.

That’s probably why he’s not feeling too well… :C

/paps/ I know it’s a lot of money. That’s why I’m trying to help. ; v ; I keep seeing that the levels should be Ammonia-0 Nitrite-0 Nitrates- 20?

Yeah. That sounds about right. ;laksjdl;fkasjdf The API Master set is so damn expensive. Hngg. x _x

Thank you again, Moginz. Really. <3
